Testimonials for Philosophy for Coaches

What’s the sign of a great course? When you are still talking about it, long after completion. That’s been my experience of Philosophy for Coaches. As someone who never studied Philosophy before, this course not only plugged a major hole in my education – it also made me a more engaging coach. Having access to ideas from Descartes (Doubting is good!),  Nietzsche (Searching for truth can be lonely), and Zizek (Beware of ideology) is empowering.  If you are looking for a passionate guide who can make philosophy accessible without diluting its power, you have found one in Julian Humphreys.

Philosophy For Coaches is a tremendously valuable learning experience for coaches who want to explore their own thinking and that of their clients on the key questions we all ask - Who  am I? How do I access truth and knowledge?  How should I live my life? This program expanded my thinking far beyond my expectations, by giving me exposure to ten different philosophers.  The materials and structure of the program is carefully designed with reading material, videos and genuinely fascinating class discussions.  Julian keeps the classes small and creates a relaxed, safe environment that encourages exploration and in-depth discussion among a diverse group of learners.  My classmates in this program are brilliant and I learned from each of them. Coaches who have a desire to learn and a bit of time will appreciate this opportunity to open their minds to a wonderful intellectual challenge and an exciting learning experience shared with a group of terrific coaches.

Philosophy for Coaches was a veritable buffet of exploration, learning and growth. A complete newbie to philosophy, and not particularly fond of purely intellectual pursuits, I can say heartily that the program was a wonderful investment of time, energy and attention. In the course you’ll explore a sample platter of ten thoughtfully curated philosophers that cover a diverse range of method, message, time horizon and more. The course is well designed and masterfully facilitated to support integration and application in ways that are meaningful to you. And if you’re anything like me and the extraordinary cohorts in my class, you’ll likely learn something about yourself and your own philosophy along the way. For me, the program was a hit, very engaging, and I recommend it without hesitation.

I have always been curious about philosophy, so when I saw that Julian had the Philosophy for Coaches course, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to finally get an introduction to the great thinkers, and do it in a context that could be useful for work. Our weekly readings have challenged me to grapple with questions in new ways — it’s real work to think this hard, and worth it. The weekly cohort sessions have expanded my thinking even further. With Julian’s thoughtful guidance, and my peer’s insights, challenges and points of view, together we’ve all come to new understanding, figured out how (or if) to incorporate each week’s learning into our individual practices and life—and we've built relationships that will continue beyond the class. Fantastic!

I recommend Philosophy for Coaches to every coach I know. There are so many historical concepts and ideas that shape our society and ultimately our clients that I, for one, was aware of but not knowledgeable about. This course gave me an incredible foundation to understand the key philosophical ideas that have shaped us so that I can coach from many perspectives, not just my own. It also challenged me to widen my understanding of even more viewpoints my clients may hold. Julian is a masterful teacher - he has deep knowledge of the philosophers that he shares, while also encouraging us to make our own sense and meaning out of what we read. His genuine love of the topics and curiosity for our interpretations makes every class welcoming and engaging. I'm sad it had to end!

Stephanie // Executive Coach

I took Philosophy for Coaches as part of a continuing curiosity about the deep foundations of coaching. The course was terrific. I found my thinking and beliefs challenged every week from radically different perspectives and in the end was able to have a much more nuanced understanding of what coaching is to me, and what it is able to achieve. Julian is an empathetic, deeply knowledgeable and skillful teacher who guided us (a smart, enthusiastic and at times slightly unruly crew) through difficult readings and tricky abstractions.  If you are a coach who is at all curious about the philosophical underpinnings of coaching, I absolutely recommend this course.
